Acyclovir is used to treat shingles as well as herpes
simplex virus and other types of herpesvirus infections
which can cause painful blisters and lesions. Acyclovir
reduces the severity of outbreaks and prevents the
development of new blisters. Acyclovir cannot treat CMV
disease, which is also caused by a herpesvirus.
Acyclovir can prevent herpes simplex outbreaks, which
may help people co-infected with HIV and herpes simplex
live longer. High dose acyclovir is used to treat hairy
leukoplakia , a viral infection that usually shows up on
the sides of the tongue.
Aldara cream is used to treat skin conditions
including external genital or anal warts. Because
imiquimod does not kill the virus (HPV virus) that
causes genital or anal warts, new warts may appear
during or after treatment. This drug is also effective
at treating other skin conditions such as actinic
keratosis and superficial basal cell cancers.
Condylox is the first ever FDA approved gel that
treats genital warts. Condylox is used to remove certain
types of warts on the outside skin of the genital areas
(penis or vulva). The gel is used also to treat warts
between the genitals and the rectum, the solution is
not. Neither the gel nor the solution is used to treat
warts that occur inside the rectum, vagina, or urine
passageways inside the penis (male) or the vulva
(female). Condylox works by destroying the skin of the
wart.
Denavir is a topical antiviral medication used for
recurrent cold sores (herpes labialis) on the lips and
face in otherwise healthy adult patients. Denavir
topical may also be used for purposes other than those
listed in this medication guide.
Valtrex is a prescription medication used in the
treatment of genital herpes, herpes zoster (shingles),
and herpes simplex (cold sores). Valtrex is the only
once-a-day antiviral product, which has proven effective
in suppressing future genital herpes outbreaks in adults
with normal immune systems. Valtrex works by disrupting
the process by which the herpes virus duplicates itself
and spreads to other cells in the body.
Zovirax is used to treat herpes infections of the
skin, lip, and genitals; herpes zoster (shingles); and
chickenpox. It does not cure herpes infections but
decreases pain and itching and promotes healing. Topical
Zovirax does not prevent the recurrence of sores but may
decrease pain and itching if applied when the earliest
symptoms first appear. Oral Zovirax decreases the
frequency and severity of recurrent sores, but it is
used only by people with severe herpes infections
because of possible adverse effects. This medication is
sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or
pharmacist for more information.
